Sleep Medicine Fellowship

Geisinger’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship prepares you to diagnose and treat adult and pediatric sleep disorders — and to serve as medical director of a sleep lab.

About us

If you’re a physician who’s completed your primary training in internal medicine, family medicine, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry anesthesia or otolaryngology, you’re eligible for Geisinger’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship program.

As our sleep medicine fellow, you’ll train for one year with faculty who come from specialties as diverse as those listed above. Along with offering their clinical expertise, they conduct research and serve as leaders at Geisinger and national organizations.

You’ll work with a patient population drawn from urban, suburban and rural areas, broadening your scope of practice and gaining experience in chronic respiratory failure/home mechanical ventilation and hypoglossal nerve stimulation.

Geisinger was one of the first health systems in the nation to adopt Epic EMR more than 25 years ago. Epic captures the majority of care for people living in our geographic region, giving you unique opportunities in the research we’ll encourage you to undertake and publish.

Our program goals are:

  • To train well-rounded, compassionate physicians who can provide comprehensive care for all sleep disorders, including hypersomnias, insomnia, parasomnias and sleep breathing disorders for patients of all ages
  • To educate our fellows about the business of sleep medicine, including the role of medical director of a sleep lab
  • To prioritize personal wellness and healthy sleep while rising to the challenges of patient care, leadership and scholarship

Our curriculum focuses on the following rotations:

  • Adult sleep medicine
  • Pediatric sleep medicine
  • Respiratory failure/home mechanical ventilation clinic
  • Inpatient consultations
  • Sleep study interpretation
  • EEG interpretation
  • Otolaryngology clinic
  • Clinical psychology

Geisinger Sleep Medicine Clinical Program

Geisinger Sleep Medicine has nine sleep clinics and 34 lab beds that serve a large part of northeastern Pennsylvania. We provide the full spectrum of comprehensive sleep medicine care, including management of hypersomnias, insomnia, parasomnias and sleep breathing disorders. Our practice consists of 19 attending sleep physicians — three of whom practice pediatric sleep medicine — and seven advanced practitioners.

Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre is the largest sleep medicine clinic in the system and will serve as the home base for your fellowship. It features adult and pediatric sleep medicine clinics, an eight-bed sleep lab and the Geisinger durable medical equipment (DME) company. In addition to in-lab polysomnography, we have a robust home sleep test program that performs nearly 200 home sleep tests per month in our region alone.

Our clinical partners throughout the Geisinger system help us provide comprehensive care for more complex sleep disorders, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia through psychology
  • Surgical management of sleep apnea, including hypoglossal nerve stimulation through oral maxillofacial surgery and otolaryngology
  • Management of home invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation

Geisinger Sleep Services, launched in 2013, is our internal DME provider. While limited to patients without Medicare, Geisinger DME makes it easy for patients to obtain all their sleep care in our sleep center. Our respiratory therapists follow our patients closely in the first 90 days of device use to promote treatment adherence and tolerance.
